Rob Stimson Carpentry paints houses in Black Mountain, Swannanoa, Asheville, and the surrounding part of Buncombe County. Rob is a carpenter first, in the trade since 1985 and working in this county since 1991, which changes how a paint job gets done.

The work covers interior rooms, ceilings, and trim, exterior siding, soffit, and fascia, and doors, shutters, and porch painting. Prep is most of the job, so he scrapes, sands, caulks the open joints, and primes bare wood before any finish coat goes on. Paint rarely fails from the outside in, because water gets into the board and the wood swells and shrinks through every freeze and thaw at 2,200 feet until the film on top lets go. Soft trim and siding come out and get replaced first rather than painted over, and exteriors run spring through October while surfaces still dry overnight, so interiors are the better winter booking.

Estimates are free. Rob comes out and looks at the wood more than the color, then puts the price in writing with any wood repair listed separately so you can see what you are paying for. There is no crew and no subcontractors, so the person who quotes the job is the person who does it.

Rot that has gone through to framing needs a permit in your name, and Rob still takes the work. He does not do plumbing, electrical, roof surfaces, gutter cleaning, or garage doors.

A photo of the wall, the trim, or the porch ceiling. He can usually tell from that whether you have a paint problem or a wood problem.

He looks under the paint

Free, and he is checking the wood more than the color. Soft boards get found now rather than halfway through the job.

You approve the price

Written down before a scraper touches the house, with any wood repair listed separately so you can see what you are paying for.

How do estimates work? +

Rob comes out, looks at the job, and gives you a price before any work starts. Estimates are free. If it turns out to be something he does not do, he will say so on the phone first rather than driving out and wasting your afternoon.

What does Rob charge? +

Small jobs are hourly with a minimum. Larger jobs get a written price before work begins, so you know the number up front.

Does Rob do plumbing or electrical work? +

No. He is a carpenter, not a plumber or an electrician. He will swap a light fixture or a switch for the same kind of thing, but he does not run new wiring, add circuits, or move pipes. If that is what the job needs, you need a different trade first.

What areas does Rob serve? +

Swannanoa first, since that is home, then Black Mountain, East Asheville, Oteen, Fairview, Montreat, Ridgecrest, and Asheville. Further out is possible depending on the job. Just ask.

When do you paint exteriors? +

Spring through October, when the wood can actually dry. Interior rooms, ceilings, and trim are a better fit in winter. A January call about the siding gets scheduled for spring, not scraped in the wet.

What if there is rot behind the peeling paint? +

Then it is a carpentry job with paint at the end, not a paint job. Rob cuts out the soft wood, replaces it, and paints. You do not need a second person to open up what a painter would have covered.

Needs a permit first

The permit goes in your name as the property owner. Rob tells you what the job needs before it starts, then does the work and coordinates around the inspections.

Paint, prep, and swapping rotten trim or siding for the same thing again needs no permit. If the rot has gone through to framing, that does, and Rob still takes the job.

Not his trade, at any size: plumbing, electrical, anything on a roof surface, gutter cleaning, garage doors, and lawn and yard work. He will usually know who to call.
