Rob Stimson Carpentry hangs doors and replaces windows in Asheville, Oteen, Swannanoa, and the rest of Buncombe County. Rob has been a carpenter since 1985 and has worked in this county since 1991, and a sticking door is one of the calls he takes most often.

The work covers interior door replacement and rehanging, exterior and entry doors, storm doors, screen doors, and sliders, like for like window replacement, and weatherstripping, thresholds, and hardware. Rob checks the frame with a level before he prices a replacement, since a door that catches can come down to the hinges, the strike plate, or the opening itself, and each one is a different job. Some are a hinge adjustment and a shim inside the hour. Others need the jamb pulled and reset, and he tells you which before he starts.

Estimates are free. Rob comes out, checks the opening, and gives you the price in writing before anything comes out of the wall. There is no crew and no subcontractors, so the person who quotes the job is the person who does it.

Swapping a door or a window for the same size again needs no permit. Cutting a new opening or making an existing one bigger does, that permit goes in your name, and Rob does that framing work. He does not do plumbing, electrical, roof surfaces, gutter cleaning, or garage doors.

How do estimates work? +

Rob comes out, looks at the job, and gives you a price before any work starts. Estimates are free. If it turns out to be something he does not do, he will say so on the phone first rather than driving out and wasting your afternoon.

What does Rob charge? +

Small jobs are hourly with a minimum. Larger jobs get a written price before work begins, so you know the number up front.

Does Rob do plumbing or electrical work? +

No. He is a carpenter, not a plumber or an electrician. He will swap a light fixture or a switch for the same kind of thing, but he does not run new wiring, add circuits, or move pipes. If that is what the job needs, you need a different trade first.

What areas does Rob serve? +

Swannanoa first, since that is home, then Black Mountain, East Asheville, Oteen, Fairview, Montreat, Ridgecrest, and Asheville. Further out is possible depending on the job. Just ask.

Do I need a permit for my project? +

Not always. Replacing boards, rails, treads, trim, siding, and like-for-like doors and windows on a single-family home in North Carolina usually needs no permit. New decks, new openings, and structural work do. When one is needed, it goes in your name as the property owner, and Rob tells you what the job needs before it starts so nothing is a surprise. He does the work and coordinates around the inspections. Plumbing and electrical are a different trade entirely, not a permit question.

Can you cut a new door or window opening? +

Yes. Like-for-like replacement of a door or window in the same opening needs no permit in North Carolina. Changing the opening does, and he still takes the job. The permit goes in your name as the property owner and he tells you that up front, before any work is scheduled.

Needs a permit first

The permit goes in your name as the property owner. Rob tells you what the job needs before it starts, then does the work and coordinates around the inspections.

Swapping a door or a window for the same size again needs no permit. Cutting a brand new opening, or making an existing one bigger, does. That is framing work, and Rob does it.
